Thousands of citizens hurried to turn their Turkish lira into cryptocurrencies when news emerged that Turkey's President Recep Erdogan had replaced the head of the country's central bank in March 2021.
The two largest crypto exchanges in Turkey, Paribu and BtcTurk, have been trading over $1 billion worth of crypto daily since the beginning of 2021, according to local Turkish media. Today, the country's 11 most successful crypto exchanges have a combined 24-hour trading volume of more than $6 billion, billed to more than 2.4 million users' exchange wallets.
On Monday, the increase in crypto searches provided a small glimpse into the bigger picture. According to a lecturer at Istanbul's Kadr Has University, where he teaches cryptocurrencies and blockchain, Turkish interest in crypto has been gradually - for years.
